Winnemucca’s gaming story goes back to 1931, when a 20-something local assemblyman, Phil Tobin, helped legalize gambling—kickstarting what would become Nevada’s $13-billion-a-year tourism industry. By the ’50s and ’60s, pioneers like Joe Mackie were shaping the town’s casino scene, renovating properties and putting Winnemucca on the entertainment map. Today, four major casinos—Winners, Winnemucca Inn & Casino, Model T Resort, and Sundance—keep the fun alive with slots, blackjack, Texas Hold’em, craps, and roulette.
